French 19th-Century Terracotta Confit Pot with Mustard Glaze

A vibrant and well-preserved 19th-century French confit pot from the southwest region of France, traditionally used to preserve meats in duck or goose fat. Handcrafted from terracotta, this rustic vessel features a striking mustard yellow glaze on the upper half, a color historically derived from natural ochres local to the region.
The pot has classic double handles and a wide mouth, with the lower portion left unglazed for burial in the cool earth—an early form of refrigeration. The surface bears beautiful traces of use and wear: subtle drips in the glaze, minor chips along the rim, and a soft, matte texture where the clay remains exposed.
