Emilian Bolognese Walnut Chest of Drawers with Rusticated Drawers, Mid-17th Century

A stately and rare mid-17th century walnut chest of drawers from the Emilian region of Italy, attributed to Bolognese craftsmanship. This powerful piece embodies the sculptural solidity and architectural detailing characteristic of the period, with bold proportions and finely rusticated drawer fronts.
Composed of three large drawers, each with deeply molded panels and stepped geometric framing, the chest reflects a rustic yet noble aesthetic, a hallmark of Emilian furniture in the Baroque age. The original hanging brass handles and iron locks are still present, lending authenticity and a sense of continuity with its origins.
The brushed (planed) sides reveal the honest handwork of the era, while the bracket feet provide both stability and classical weight. The top remains unaltered, rich with patina, wear, and the subtle irregularities only time and use can create. Its warm walnut grain glows beneath a gently aged surface, preserved without over-restoration.
A commanding storage piece and a beautiful example of 17th-century Italian joinery, this chest would be equally at home in a refined country house or anchoring a contemporary space with historical depth.
